Pupcake recipe - Tray of frosted Pumpkin Banana Pupcakes on a marble cake stand with birthday candles.

It was Theo’s FIRST birthday last week so naturally, being the dog mamma that I am, I had to whip up a Theo-approved pupcake recipe to celebrate his special day.

While Theo is normally pretty picky when it comes to food, he *devoured* this pupcake recipe. Proof below.

Nut Free Dog Cake

While Theo loves peanut butter, (okay, any type of nuts / nut butter), his stomach isn’t the biggest fan. I wanted to make a pupcake recipe without peanut butter so Theo could enjoy them, without having to deal with the consequences.

For these pupcakes, the base is a pumpkin + banana mixture which gets mixed with eggs and coconut oil. I then used a mixture of regular flour with rolled oats. Feel free to sub whole wheat flour and/or almond flour if you know your dog does okay with nuts!

Dog Icing Recipe

What kind of cupcake doesn’t have icing?? Obviously had to come up with a dog-friendly icing recipe to top these bites with, and I think it was Theo’s favorite part too!

Instead of using all cream cheese for the frosting (which would pipe better), I did mostly greek yogurt with a little bit of low fat cream cheese (another Theo favorite). Unfortunately, because of the high fat content in cream cheese, it doesn’t always sit well with his stomach. Using a greek yogurt based frosting was another Theo modification I decided to incorporate into this pupcake recipe.

If your pup does fine with cream cheese, you could definitely do all cream cheese and skip the greek yogurt entirely!

While this is the first dog friendly recipe I’ve got on The Mindful Hapa blog, let me know if there are any other special doggo treats you’d like to see in the comments below. And if you do make these pupcakes, PLEASE TAG ME over on IG (@themindfulhapa), because nothing makes me happier than photos of cute floofers!

Lastly, if your dog isn’t sensitive to nuts, there are a lot of tasty peanut recipes out there such as these Peanut Butter Pupcakes from Damn Delicious. If you’re looking for a mini cake, you can check out this recipe from The Almond Eater.

I also want to say that with Theo, we only let him have 1-2 pupcakes to make sure he did okay with them (he did!). We stored the extras in the freezer and have been giving them to him as treats for when he’s being an extra good boy 🙂

I made this for our golden retrievers 1st birthday and it was perfect. He has a sensitive stomach and is on prescription food but this recipe sat perfectly well with him. I substituted the coconut oil for soybean oil and the cake came out great in a buntlet pan. Thanks for the recipe!

This was a big hit! I had to change a bit and substitute apple sauce for pumpkin and added some peanut butter. Um, I even tried the icing and that was yummy, I had icing so may use for a human treat.

Love this recipe! I make it every year for my pups birthday. I make one big cupcake for him and minis for his park friends. They are a hit! I use greek yogurt as a substitute for coconut oil and honey instead of maple syrup. I usually put a bit of honey in the batter too. This year I put dog safe peanut butter into the batter and dang as a human Id eat it! Recommend this treat for your doggos!

These are fantastic for my dogs. Thank you for the recipe.
** the real reason I’m commenting, though, is to personally thank you for enlarging my vocabulary. I looked at the word “Alliteratively” and thought, “wow, what a strange typo. She certainly meant to write “alternatively”. Nope, you taught a 53 year old a new word.
    Thanks !

Easy, healthy and delicious! enjoyed equally by pups and humans. I substituted oat flour for wheat and good culture sour cream (it’s very thick compared to other brands) for the cream cheese because it is what I had on hand and they turned out perfect.

I made the Pumpkin Banana Cupcake for our Golden Doodle, Shari’s First Birthday! The recipe was super easy and I am happy to report, Shari loved it. I was happy that I could find a recipe that was peanut free, since one of the humans is severely allergic to them. I did not try the frosting since I didn’t have yogurt on hand. So she had to settle for Whipped Cream Icing. Shari gave the recipe 4 paws up, as that is the position she is in at the moment:) Doodles are so much fun!!
    Thank you for sharing!

The dogs LOVED the pupcakes. They worked perfectly in a full-sized muffin tin at 22 minutes. I used gluten free (1-to-1) because it’s all I have in the house, and it did great.

Then when it cooled I cut it in circles with a round cookie cutter to make a small layer cake. It turned out adorable and our pup loved it! (I put a link to the pics on Instagram)
