A sweet treat with melt in your mouth texture, these Frozen Chocolate Covered Bananas are the perfect bite sized dessert. With a creamy peanut butter layer and crisp frozen chocolate coating, these banana bites are irresistible. After all, what’s not to love about a no-bake, bite sized dessert that’s healthy, delicious, and has less than 10 ingredients?! Frozen banana bites also taste like ice cream bites (but healthy!) so that’s another bonus too 🙂
I love how these bites actually melt-in-your-mouth with the chocolate coating then get all creamy from the peanut butter and banana. Truly a flavor explosion for the tastebuds and is even more delicious with the fun toppings.

Ingredients
Bananas – You’ll want the bananas to be a good in-between for ripeness, not too firm or too mushy. I personally prefer an all yellow banana, but if you like it a little sweeter, you can do a yellow banana with spots of brown. Either way will be a good texture for slicing/freezing while being sweet enough too.
Peanut Butter – I love using Georgia Grinders peanut butter because it’s nothing but peanuts and salt. Feel free to use any type you have available though.
Chocolate Chips – You can use semi-sweet, milk chocolate, dark, or even white chocolate to coat the banana bites. I prefer using dark chocolate to balance out the sweetness but choose whichever suits your tastebuds best!
Coconut Oil – This helps melt the chocolate and then causes it firm up in the freezer. It also creates the melt-in-your-mouth texture as the coconut oil/chocolate mixture begins melting at room temp (aka in your mouth too).
Toppings – So many choices, choose what flavor and textures you like most!
How to Make Frozen Chocolate Covered Bananas
- Peel and slice your bananas in ~¼” slices.
- Line a baking tray with parchment paper and place banana slices in a single layer. To half of the slices, top with a layer peanut butter.
- Top each banana slice topped with peanut butter, with another banana slice so the peanut butter is sandwiched between 2 banana slices.
- Move to the freezer to harden, for at least 45 minutes.
- Right before pulling frozen peanut butter banana bites out of the freezer, melt chocolate chips and coconut oil together. Microwave in 30 second increments until the chocolate reaches a smooth consistency.
- Remove frozen peanut butter + banana bites and dunk each in chocolate, placing back on the parchment-lined baking tray.
- Top with your favorite toppings and move to the freezer to harden for an additional 30 minutes.
How to Melt Chocolate Chips
Almost everyone has struggled with melting chocolate at one point or another. It’s easy enough for a forgotten chocolate bar to melt in a purse, bag, or elsewhere (been there, done that) … however it’s not always easy to intentionally melt it!
My first few tries of melting chocolate usually ended with a lumpy and dry “melt” or with burning the chocolate. Thankfully I’ve learned a few tricks along the way:
- Combine the chocolate chips with a small amount of coconut oil, butter, or even milk before heating. This adds moisture to the chocolate as it melts to create a smooth texture. Adding in liquids once the chocolate starts to melt/is melted can cause it to ‘”seize” up, aka get all thick and lumpy.
- Heat the chocolate in 30 second intervals in the microwave and stir between each. This allows you to catch the chocolate just as it’s getting melty versus overheating it.
- Stir, stir, and stir again! It’s easy to overheat chocolate when we don’t stir because it doesn’t look like anything is melting when it actually is. The best time to stop heating the chocolate is when it’s just beginning to get real melty, start stirring it and you’ll see that it’s actually ready to go!
Toppings for Frozen Chocolate Covered Bananas
In my opinion, everything is better with toppings and that includes these chocolate covered banana bites. They add color, texture, and flavor to take these bites to the next level. Plus they’re fun and easy so why not?!
Shredded Coconut Flakes – I love the flavor combo of chocolate + coconut + banana so sprinkling these overtop is a favorite of mine. You can use sweetened or unsweetened, just depends on your preference!
Cacao Nibs – Add great crunch and a rich chocolate flavor to these banana bites. Cacao nibs are just small pieces of crushed cacao beans so they’re super healthy for you and completely unsweetened!
Mini White Chocolate Chips – You could use any type of mini chocolate chip for this topping, I just love the contrast of sweet white chocolate with the rich chocolate coating. Plus they look cute on top!
Chia Seeds – For another health packed topping, sprinkle some chia seeds overtop. These are almost like little sprinkles just made healthy with good fats and still give a slight crunch.
Sprinkles – Nothing beats the real deal though when it comes to sprinkles. There’s just something so fun and tasty about rainbow sprinkles, makes everything more special!
Chopped Nuts – Make these into chunky monkey banana bites by sprinkling some crushed walnuts overtop! Pecans, peanuts, or cashews would also make for a tasty and crunchy topping.
Goji Berries – Add a sweet and slightly fruity flavor to the peanut butter banana bites. Adding these on top almost creates a peanut butter and jelly esc flavor!
How to Store Chocolate Covered Banana Bites
These tasty little bites store perfectly well in the freezer. You could leave them in the fridge for a few hours if you wanted them to be soft but much longer and the banana will begin to oxidize. So for daily and long term storage, use the freezer! Think of it as building up your freezer stash of desserts so that you always have that something sweet when the craving strikes.
I’ll eat these banana bites straight out of the freezer but they’re also good if you let a few thaw at room temp before eating. Then they get extra gooey and creamy but either way is delicious!
If you’re looking for more tasty and bite sized snacks, I’ve got you covered.
These Vegan Cashew Coconut Energy Balls are healthy, easy, and the perfect sweet treat or midday snack. The toasted coconut and rich cashew butter blend perfectly with the sweet medjool dates for a soft and tasty bite!
Or for something with a bit of crunch, this Chunky Monkey Chocolate Chip Granola is a house favorite. It’s filled with clusters of nuts and oats + mixed with sweet banana chips and chocolate chips after baking. Makes for a sweet start to the day and has the best, big and crunchy, clusters!
